New Jersey residents have been shocked to hear that an Indian woman filing for divorce said she suffered from modern-day slavery, domestic violence and more after an arranged marriage took a turn for the worst.
According to the lawsuit, the woman said she was forced to move to the United States before completing her college degree in India. Domestic violence can include a range of physical and emotional abuse. For this woman, the domestic violence meant she was unable to leave the house her husband's parents lived in because they took away her passport and other belongings.
In addition, the woman was physically abused, forced to perform unpaid work and watched with cameras. The family even rationed her food, regulated her bathroom use, took her cellphone, did not allow her any medical care and listened to phone calls with her family. The woman lost 26 pounds from becoming malnourished.
She said she put up with the abuse because she was scared, but she knew the actions were not right. In order to keep her under control, the in-laws threatened her with divorce, a shameful act in the Indian culture.
She is asking for $75,000 in damages for the pain, physical abuse and psychological suffering and for the forced labor she endured from her in-laws.
The domestic violence started almost as soon as the couple got married. The woman claimed she discovered that immigration paperwork was filled out before she met her husband, which points to the fact he was looking for a servant and not a wife.
