Kardashian to remain 'handcuffed' to Humphries for months

Millions of Americans watched in awe when reality TV star Kim Kardashian married New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries in a lavish made-for-TV wedding in August 2011. Kardashian filed for divorce just 72 days later, probably thinking that the couple's short marriage and iron-clad prenuptial agreement would mean a fast and easy divorce.

However, more than a year later, Kardashian and Humphries are still legally married as the case has inched along at a snail's pace. In a court appearance last week, Kardashian's attorney told the judge presiding over the case that her client feels "handcuffed" to her ex because the divorce is taking so long to settle.

Kris Humphries seeks annulment to end high-asset marriage

When marriages do not last as long as couples hope, they often have a few options when deciding how to end their marriages. In New Jersey, a couple can file for an annulment, separation or divorce.

Like divorce, an annulment ends a marriage. Unlike divorce, it actually reverses the marriage, making it as though the marriage never actually happened. In order to qualify for an annulment, an individual must prove that he or she was subjected to fraud or marital misrepresentation.

In many situations, when marriages are incredibly short, one spouse may seek an annulment. According to one recent article, that may be how Kris Humphries is hoping to end his high-asset marriage to Kim Kardashian.

The first legal details about the Kardashian/Humphries divorce

A few months ago, we wrote about the big engagement between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humpries. There was speculation as to whether the couple would create a prenuptial agreement and whether Kim was going to wear her multi-million dollar engagement ring every day.

Now, Kim is filing for divorce. The high-asset couple is divorcing after just 72 days of not-so-wedded bliss. However, as with any divorce, there are several issues the couple needs to resolve.
