Kardashian to remain 'handcuffed' to Humphries for months

Millions of Americans watched in awe when reality TV star Kim Kardashian married New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries in a lavish made-for-TV wedding in August 2011. Kardashian filed for divorce just 72 days later, probably thinking that the couple's short marriage and iron-clad prenuptial agreement would mean a fast and easy divorce.

However, more than a year later, Kardashian and Humphries are still legally married as the case has inched along at a snail's pace. In a court appearance last week, Kardashian's attorney told the judge presiding over the case that her client feels "handcuffed" to her ex because the divorce is taking so long to settle.

Humphries makes power play in divorce from Kardashian

The ongoing divorce saga of Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian took another turn this week with a new report from TMZ suggesting that the New Jersey Nets power forward has made a power play for $7 million from his estranged wife. The report quotes sources close to the NBA player as saying that if Kardashian refuses the offer, Humphries will turn their high net worth divorce case into a long, highly public and potentially highly embarrassing affair.

The star-crossed couple tied the knot last August in a highly publicized ceremony that drew more than 10 million views on the cable channel E! A petition citing "irreconcilable differences" as grounds for a divorce was filed 72 days later.

Differences in divorce, annulment and how they impact finances

The split of celebrity couple Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries has been stirring a lot of controversy in tabloids and entertainment news. As a result, many couples in New Jersey now wonder whether divorce or annulment is most appropriate for them. In addition to a difference in which is legally correct, there are also differences in how the choice will impact your finances.

Getting a marriage annulled can prove to be extremely beneficial in many of the financial implications divorced couples typically face.

In comparison to a divorce -- in which the marriage has a beginning and an end -- an annulment makes the marriage null and void. An annulment makes it appear as though the marriage never took place at all.

Kris Humphries seeks annulment to end high-asset marriage

When marriages do not last as long as couples hope, they often have a few options when deciding how to end their marriages. In New Jersey, a couple can file for an annulment, separation or divorce.

Like divorce, an annulment ends a marriage. Unlike divorce, it actually reverses the marriage, making it as though the marriage never actually happened. In order to qualify for an annulment, an individual must prove that he or she was subjected to fraud or marital misrepresentation.

In many situations, when marriages are incredibly short, one spouse may seek an annulment. According to one recent article, that may be how Kris Humphries is hoping to end his high-asset marriage to Kim Kardashian.
