Kardashian to remain 'handcuffed' to Humphries for months
Millions of Americans watched in awe when reality TV star Kim Kardashian married New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries in a lavish made-for-TV wedding in August 2011. Kardashian filed for divorce just 72 days later, probably thinking that the couple's short marriage and iron-clad prenuptial agreement would mean a fast and easy divorce.
However, more than a year later, Kardashian and Humphries are still legally married as the case has inched along at a snail's pace. In a court appearance last week, Kardashian's attorney told the judge presiding over the case that her client feels "handcuffed" to her ex because the divorce is taking so long to settle.

Why did Mitt Romney testify in high-asset divorce?
When high net-worth couples divorce in New Jersey, the property division process can become very complicated. New Jersey family law states that the division of marital property must be fair and equitable, but this does not always mean a simple 50/50 split. In order to negotiate an equitable division, all of the marital assets must be assigned an accurate value. To do this, high net-worth divorce attorneys often bring in various professionals to appraise property.
An example of this process appeared last week when a court released testimony that presidential candidate Mitt Romney provided in a 1991 post-divorce lawsuit. In that case, Romney--who was then the owner and chief executive of Bain Capital--was asked to provide his opinion on the value of Staples' stock. The husband in the case was the founder of Staples, and it was thus important to determine the value of the company's stock in order to ensure a fair divorce settlement.
What can make a prenuptial agreement null and void?
While well intentioned, many couples that walk down the aisle eventually decide to go their separate ways. It's smart, therefore, for individuals to protect whatever assets they bring to a marriage. A prenuptial agreement is one way that individuals, especially those with considerable wealth, can protect their financial standing. Group of ex-wives allege New Jersey judge is biased
A group of New Jersey women have banded together to take on a Monmouth County family court judge, who they claim favored their wealthy and sometimes criminal ex-husbands in their divorce cases. One 42-year-old woman alleges that the judge awarded her ex-husband custody of their three children even after he confessed to involvement in a mob-related murder in the 1990s.
The five women have written to the New Jersey governor and other lawmakers in effort to get the judge, who they claim has a vendetta against the opposite sex, removed from the bench. In a letter to the governor, one of the women said she "no longer believe[s]" in the fairness of the state's legal system because of how the judge handled her divorce case.
Married forever or considering divorce: Prenups benefit everyone
When most people think about prenuptial agreements, they assume that prenups are only for people with celebrity-statuses or people who are bringing millions of dollars into a marriage. In reality, most couples in Old Bridge who are getting married could benefit from signing a prenuptial agreement.
Regardless of whether a couple files for divorce or stays married forever, a prenuptial agreement can serve them well.
If the couple stays married, signing a prenup can help reassure both partners that they know the financial situation of the other partner, and it can help ensure that conversations about finances are started before the marriage. If the couple gets divorced, signing a prenup can help ensure the asset division is as smooth a process as possible.

Granted, most of the weddings in Old Bridge do not have the same pomp and circumstance as weddings hosted by celebrities, but there are still lessons high net worth couples can learn from celebrities.
